Dr. Siegmund is a biostatistician with expertise in cancer modeling and the statistical analysis of epigenetic data in human disease. She has published numerous papers studying DNA methylation, and teaches a course on the statistical analysis of high-dimensional data. Her current research focuses on developing mathematical models to understand the growth and spread of cancer. These models address fundamental questions about aging through modeling cell division processes from a molecular phylogenetic approach.

Dr. Siegmund is interested the analysis of DNA methylation and gene expression data. She is developing mathematical models that will allow the identification of disease sub-types based on DNA methylation profiles. Other interests and skills relate to the design and analysis of family studies for gene characterization.

Description: Health disparities in our nation are acute and increasing the diversity of biomedical research scientists is one key strategy to address this crisis. With the current deluge of health-related data and a projected 34% growth in the job market for statisticians from 2019 to 2029 (Bureau of Labor Statistics), now is the time to diversify our workforce in the specialties of biostatistics and data science. Herein, we plan to expand the pool of students from underrepresented groups in these disciplines by developing, conducting, and evaluating a summer course that teaches skills in biostatistics and data science, LA’s Biostatistics and Data Science Summer Training program at the University of Southern California (LA’s BeST @USC), with a focus on current research challenges in the study of heart and lung disease.
