Dr. Setiawan is a cancer epidemiologist focusing on understanding the determinants of racial/ethnic differences in cancer incidence and mortality and identifying populations at highest risk because of genetic and biologic factors, environmental exposures, or a combination of both. Her research goal is to identify effective modalities for disease prevention for population at risk and ultimately reduce cancer health disparities. Her primary research interest in cancer study is focused on endometrial, liver, and pancreatic cancer.
She earned her B.S. in biochemistry from UCLA, M.S. and Ph.D. in cancer epidemiology from UCLA School of Public Health and completed her postdoctoral fellowship in cancer and genetic epidemiology at Harvard and USC. Dr. Setiawan has led many projects in several large epidemiologic studies such as the Multiethnic Cohort, the California Teachers Study, the Harvard Nurses’ Health Study and two NCI’s consortia the Breast and Prostate Cancer Cohort Consortium, the Epidemiology of Endometrial Cancer Consortium, and the NHGRI Population Architecture Using Genomics and Epidemiology study. In 2006 she received a National Cancer Institute’s career development award (K07). She has served as a Principal Investigator of several NIH/NCI-, American Cancer Society-, and foundation-funded grants.
