Renal electrolyte handling in females vs. males over life cycle
    NIH 2R01DK083785-10A1Aug 29, 2022 - May 31, 2027
    Role: PI
Description: The blood pressure set point is determined by the kidney, and disruption of kidney function can provoke hypertension, the leading cause of premature death in the developed world. This MPI project aims to advance our understanding of how nephrons adjust operation over life cycle as a function of sex and age (in order to maintain homeostasis and blood pressure), and how kidney function adapts in response to challenges including lactation, menopause, loss/donation of one kidney, and dietary salt. We propose to combine experimental measurements in rats with computational modeling to determine how age- and sex- based differences in kidney fluid and electrolyte handling impact blood pressure regulation (which can guide the appropriate choice of anti-hypertensive therapeutic targets) as a function of sex and stage in life cycle.

(Note that publications are often cited in additional ways that are not shown here.) Fields are based on how the National Library of Medicine (NLM) classifies the publication's journal and might not represent the specific topic of the publication. Translation tags are based on the publication type and the MeSH terms NLM assigns to the publication.
