Dr. Erberich received his undergraduate, master, and doctoral degrees in Computer Science and Medical Informatics from the RWTH Aachen University, Aachen, Germany. His research fellowship at the Department of Radiology, University of California San Francisco, was recognized with the Scientific Merit Award by the Radiological Society of North America. Dr. Erberich founded and directed the Neurofunctional Imaging Laboratory, a division of the Interdisciplinary Center for Clinical Research, University Hospital, Aachen, Germany, which pioneered functional MR imaging and machine learning for image analytics. His work is well-published in collaboration with interdisciplinary teams, including clinical Neurosciences, Neurology, Neurosurgery, and Neuroradiology.
Dr. Erberich joined Children’s Hospital Los Angeles (CHLA) in 2001 to continue his work on functional MRI focusing on early brain development in neonates and infants. At CHLA, he also developed large-scale international medical imaging and informatics networks in pediatrics, including the Children’s Oncology Group, New Approaches to Neuroblastoma Therapy, and several pharmaceutical sponsored clinical trial networks in Asia and the Middle East. For this work, he received technology innovation awards from the Internet2 Consortium and Computer World.
In his role as Professor of Research Radiology (Keck Medicine of USC) and Biomedical Engineering (USC Viterbi School of Engineering), he created and co-directed the Center for Health Informatics, a Division of the Information Sciences Institute. The center innovated new technologies and data science methods for healthcare, the life sciences, and clinical research.
In 2010 he was appointed Director Biomedical Informatics at CHLA and the Saban Research Institute. He established and directed scientific computing resources and methodologies critical for data-driven research from bench-to-bedside in this role.
In 2019 Dr. Erberich was appointed as the first Chief Data Officer of CHLA. In this role, Dr. Erberich is leading data science, basic and clinical research informatics & analytics, and research IT at CHLA. He is responsible for developing and executing the organization’s data strategy and creating data solutions for basic, translational, and clinical research required to meet the research enterprise’s needs and clinical innovation at CHLA. With particular emphasis on emerging trends in big data, machine learning, and high-performance computing, Dr. Erberich is responsible for fostering data-driven approaches, bringing together interdisciplinary teams of physicians, basic researchers, and data scientists.
