Overview
Dr. Harlan is the Associate Dean for Student Affairs, and a Clinical Professor of Pediatrics and Medical Education. He oversees Career advising, Student well-being, Academic support services, and Student government.
Dr. Harlan joined Keck in 2014 and directed/co-directed Keck’s foundational course: the Introduction to Clinical Medicine (ICM) for 10 years. Dr. Harlan works clinically in outpatient pediatrics at LA General Medical Center. His professional interests center on professional identify formation, faculty development, well-being, lifestyle medicine and culinary medicine.
Dr. Harlan received the Leonard Tow Humanism in Medicine Award in 2019 and 2026, and the Tree of Life Compassionate Care in Medicine award in 2025. Dr. Harlan serves on the National Board for the American College of Culinary Medicine (ACCM), and served on the Executive Board for the Directors of Clinical Skills Courses (DOCS) from 2020-2024.
Dr. Harlan has worked over the past 7 years to increase Nutrition education in the Keck School of Medicine curriculum, working with interested medical students and Deans. KSOM uses the ‘Health meets Food’ curriculum to help medical students engage with Nutrition concepts in a hands-on way. He works with pediatric residents on Quality Improvement projects centered on promoting healthy habits and reducing childhood obesity in their clinic.
Dr. Harlan graduated from Princeton University and Keck School of Medicine. He completed Pediatrics residency at UCSF, and a Masters in public health from the University of Utah. Dr. Harlan was Assistant Professor of Pediatrics and a pediatric hospitalist in Utah for 7 years, then spent 5 years at IPC The Hospitalist Company as Director of Medical Affairs.
He enjoys travelling, skiing, hiking, tennis, golf, and cappuccino-making.
