JOYCE SUMI, RDH, BS, MSDH, is an Associate Professor of Clinical Dentistry in the Department of Dental Hygiene and Director of the Community Oral Health Graduate Certificate Program at the Herman Ostrow School of Dentistry of the University of Southern California. She is a member of the Online Learning Consortium Committee of USC and a facilitator in the Inter-Professional Geriatric Curriculum Program. Joyce is Chair for the American Dental Education Association Special Interest Group for Graduate Dental Hygiene Education Programs. She serves the oral health profession internationally with clinical advanced periodontal instrumentation instruction and serving on the National Advisory Panel member for the National Center for Dental Hygiene Research and Practice.
Joyce Sumi’s research was acknowledged with the first place in the Graduate Division at the UCSF Annual Scientific Session and third place award Research and Clinical Excellence Award. She has co-authored a chapter for two editions in the Darby and Walsh Dental Hygiene theory and Practice textbooks. Research, publication and speaking interests include periodontal therapy, clinician hypermobility, student and faculty empathy, community-based service learning and interprofessional education.
