    Dr. Liu obtained his PhD degree in Chemistry and conducted postdoctoral work in immunology. He then received an MD degree and subsequently dermatology residency training, while maintaining his research program. He was Distinguished Professor and Chair of Dermatology at University of California-Davis. In 2010, he became Distinguished Research Fellow and Director at Institute of Biomedical Sciences, Academia Sinica, and was appointed as Vice President of Academia Sinica in 2016. He returned to the US in 2022 and joined the Department of Dermatology, Keck School of Medicine of USC in 2023.
    Dr. Liu’s research program is focused on the galectin family of animal lectins. His group contributed to the initial discovery of this family and naming of the family. His group has been investigating the functions of a number of the family members in the immune and inflammatory responses, including skin diseases.
    Dr. Liu is a member of the American Society for Clinical Investigation and a member of the Association of American Physicians. He is a fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS), an academician of Academia Sinica, Taiwan, and a fellow of the National Academy of Inventors. He received the Khwarizmi International Award in 2015.
    Dr. Liu has published 317 original papers and 79 reviews. His publications have been cited over 42,560 times and his h-index is 110, as of March 1, 2024.
    Dr. Liu’s clinical expertise is medical dermatology. He is particularly interested in autoimmune skin diseases, mast-cell mediated diseases, atopic dermatitis, and psoriasis.
