Dr. Nguyen's broad research interests are in the social determinants of health and health disparities in the context of successful aging with HIV. Her research draws heavily on community-engaged approaches and her research program focuses on mental health and social relationships in later life. Her research has been funded by the National Institute on Aging and some of her current work cover topics such as advance care planning, brain health, and interventions to combat social isolation among older adults living with HIV.
Dr. Nguyen was a National Institute on Aging Butler-Williams Scholar and was part of the first cohort of the UCSD Sustained Training for HIV and Aging Research program. She is the Chair of the Aging and Public Health Section of the American Public Health Association (APHA), an Executive Board member of the American Academy of Health Behavior (AAHB), and an academic member of the HIV and Aging Research Project- Palm Springs (HARP-PS) advisory board. She is also the Executive Editor of Health Behavior and Policy Review.
