Overview Anatoly V. Grishin, PhD, a researcher with the Division of Pediatrics at Childrens Hospital Los Angeles and assistant professor of surgery at the Keck School of Medicine, received a two-year grant totaling $400,000 to fund a pilot study about how intestinal epithelial cells establish and maintain tolerance to Toll-like receptor (TLR) ligands of bacteria that populate the gastrointestinal tract.
The study will define roles of A20 and CYLD, the two key negative regulators of innate immune responses in intestinal tolerance to different TLR ligands.
Because intestinal inflammatory disorders such as necrotizing enterocolitis and IBD can be regarded as failure to establish and/or maintain tolerance to luminal microbiota, dissecting the mechanisms of intestinal tolerance to TLR ligands will lead to better understanding of these ailments, and, ultimately, better therapies.
