Murali Nair joined the School of Social Work in 2012 after 20 years teaching at Cleveland State University, including stints as the co-director of the Center for Healing Across Cultures and director of its School of Social Work. He teaches courses in the Community Organization, Planning and Administration concentration and courses in policy and international social work.
Nair began his professional social work career in health settings and later became involved in procuring community resources for children, and the migrant and refugee populations. His interdisciplinary research interests include alternative health systems, gerontology (cross-national studies on centenarians, healthy aging), service learning, poverty and disaster management.
He has written, edited or co-authored 10 books, including the 9th edition of Macro Practice in a Generalist Perspective and 3rd edition of Service Learning. He has also written more than 100 refereed journal articles, book chapters and invitational paper presentations at state, national and international professional conferences. His cross-national field studies have resulted in the production of eight documentaries, including three on centenarians, tsunami aftermath and the Hurricane Katrina aftermath.
