Dr. Strassburg has had a long and successful career at the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health. Most recently as Director of Web Informatics where he directed all Web Development for the Department (http://ph.lacounty.gov). In previous positions, Dr. Strassburg was Chief Epidemiologist for the Department, and Director of the Immunization Program. He has been involved in developing emergency preparedness plans and training protocols for bioterrorism, pandemic flu, and emerging diseases both for Los Angeles and other municipalities. Outside of his work at the County he has served as a consultant in the field of Epidemiology and Information Systems for over 30 years. For the World Health Organization he has carried out over 100 consultancies in 25 countries; principally on disease surveillance and eradication strategies, as well as public health information systems. Five diseases have received the focus of his attention during this period; smallpox, polio, measles, rubella, and neonatal tetanus. For over 25 years he has taught classes in the Department of Epidemiology at the School of Public Health, UCLA, where he is currently Adjunct Professor. He also teaches public health courses at USC and at Claremont Graduate University. Courses aim to provide both majors and non-majors with practical knowledge related to epidemiological measures and methods, and practice at local, state, federal, and international levels. Classes have included environmental epidemiology, bioterrorism, and fundamentals of epidemiology. Recently he has served as a consultant to the Gates Foundation (on polio eradication), PAHO (on immunization information technologies), and to the Sabin Institute (related to establishing and international organization for immunization managers).
