Dr. Groffens major research interest is the identification of molecular processes that result in the development of cancer. For some forms of cancer, specifically chronic myelocytic leukemia and some forms of acute lymphoblastic leukemia, he has been successful in identifying the molecular events that resulted in cancer. In these two leukemias, he has discovered two genescalled BCR and ABLthat have undergone alterations. His current research is directed toward discovering the precise mechanisms by which these two genes can cause a cell to become malignant. His research uses state-of-the-art technology to generate transgenic mice and mice that have undergone homologous recombination. He also creates similar mouse models for other types of human cancer and deleterious diseases.
