      My research focus is to better understand complex cellular-molecular mechanisms of vision in health and disease, especially retinitis pigmentosa (RP). I am developing therapeutics for treatment of RP through re-engineering of photoreceptor mosaics. Previously, I conducted and published the efficacy and safety of Metallopeptidase inhibitor-1 (TIMP-1) on retina, developed and validated a method for sensing electrode-retina proximity in vivo via impedance measurement and OCT imaging, and determined the morphological and circuitry changes in retina due to retinal degeneration in a transgenic rat model. I am seeking to expand my basic research discoveries to translational applications to specifically develop therapeutic interventions for human retinal degenerative disease, including age related macular degeneration. In my current investigations, I explore the re-engineering of cone photoreceptors in diseased retinas and combine computational modeling with cellular studies to identify the molecular mechanisms controlling the geometry of these photoreceptor mosaics to develop targeted key strategies to improve retinal function.
